“Fostering Empathy and Civic Responsibility through Student-led Initiatives in Digital Inclusion for the Elderly”「伴你同行,與科技共舞,與長者同樂」

To cultivate students’ empathy, civic responsibility, and appreciation for social diversity, our school’s Community Service Team actively engaged students in the Jockey Club VOLUNTEER TOGETHER – School-Based Programme. The Volunteer Leadership Programme, themed around Ageing and Elderly Care, provided a meaningful platform for students to apply values education through experiential learning and community service.

Grounded in the “Plan–Serve–Reflect” pedagogical framework, the programme empowered students to take ownership of their learning by conceptualising and implementing authentic service projects. Under the theme “Fostering Empathy and Civic Responsibility through Student-led Initiatives in Digital Inclusion for the Elderly”, students designed interactive games and instructional booklets to promote digital literacy and online safety among elderly participants. These initiatives enhanced intergenerational communication, supported digital inclusion, and contributed to the development of a caring and inclusive community.

Throughout the service journey, students demonstrated creativity and collaborative problem-solving—key competencies in the 21st-century learning framework. Through structured reflection, they deepened their understanding of community needs, evaluated their planning and execution, and identified areas for improvement. Elderly participants responded with heartfelt appreciation, commending the students for their patience, enthusiasm, and engaging approach. The activities boosted their confidence in using mobile technology, reduced resistance to digital tools, and fostered meaningful social interaction.

This initiative exemplifies the integration of Values Education, Citizenship Education, and Life-wide Learning, in alignment with the Education Bureau’s emphasis on whole-person development. It also provided authentic opportunities for students to apply cross-curricular knowledge in real-world contexts, reinforcing the importance of student agency, service leadership, and community-connected learning.

Our students were awarded a Merit Award in the Outstanding Service Planning Competition 2025 under the Jockey Club VOLUNTEER TOGETHER – School-Based Programme. This achievement reflects their commitment to social responsibility and the cultivation of empathy, echoing the Education Bureau’s focus on nurturing positive values and holistic student growth.
